Find the correct MTB brake pads: start with the caliper
A safe shopping lookup workflow: identify the caliper, check the manufacturer's pad code, then confirm rotor material restrictions before comparing offers.

“Shimano four-piston pads” is not a complete shopping specification. Start with the model code on the brake caliper, not just the lever, groupset name or the bike's original build sheet.
The lookup workflow
- Record the front and rear caliper codes separately. If you cannot identify a component confidently, ask a mechanic or the brake manufacturer.
- Look up that exact model in the manufacturer's current technical documents.
- Find the supported pad model, compound and fin configuration. Check any superseding part number rather than guessing from a similar shape.
- Confirm that the rotor permits the chosen pad material. Then search shops using the full pad code and check the quantity supplied.
A documented example: Shimano BR-M8120
Shimano's BR-M8120 parts document lists N03A resin and N04C metal finned pads, plus D03S resin and D02S metal options. This example applies to that documented caliper; it is not a compatibility list for every Shimano brake. Open Shimano's BR-M8120 parts document (PDF).
Rotor restrictions are a separate check: Shimano specifies the SM-RT56 rotor for resin pads only. A pad fitting a caliper does not make its material suitable for every rotor. Check Shimano's SM-RT56 specification.
What to write before you shop
Caliper code → approved pad code → permitted material → fins/no fins → quantity → delivered price. Confirm whether a pack services one caliper; the word “pair” alone does not establish that both brakes are covered.
